Best Attractions in Augsburg

We've curated a list of 5 iconic landmarks and must-see sites. To experience them all properly, you'll need about 11 hours of exploration time.

  • Augsburg Cathedral
    Augsburger Dom

Look up into the southern clerestory to spot five figures glaring down from the glass. These are the Augsburg Prophets, crafted in the late eleventh century and holding the title of the oldest large scale stained glass windows on earth. Augsburg Cathedral wears its messy timeline on its sleeve. You can clearly see the seam where a squat Romanesque nave crashes into an incomplete Gothic choir. Step through the south portal past stone apostles to stand on the same flooring where a quick witted chaplain and local teenagers saved the entire structure from incendiary bombs in 1944. Notice the scent of old masonry mixed with the faint metallic tang of the nearby bronze works. Your neck will spend most of the visit craned upwards toward the painted wooden ceilings and the captured Ottoman flag hanging far above the altar.

  • Fuggerei

88 cents a year: that is the rent for a flat behind the gates of the Fuggerei, the oldest social housing settlement in the world still doing its job. Inside, eight lanes of two storey houses run past small front gardens, a church with a sundial on its wall and an iron fountain at the crossing of Herrengasse and Ochsengasse. About 150 people really do live here, so the mood is closer to a quiet village than an open air museum, and the pull cord door bells have never been swapped for buzzers. Three small museums fill in the picture: a flat kept in its original eighteenth century state, a modern show flat on Ochsengasse that shows how residents live today, and a wartime air raid shelter with its own exhibition. Allow a couple of hours, and finish at the sundial on the wall of St Markus church.

  • Schaezlerpalais

Step into Augsburg's Schaezlerpalais and feel the opulent grandeur of a bygone era, where every hall whispers tales of aristocratic life and celebrated art. This magnificent Rococo palace, once home to powerful bankers, now showcases an extraordinary collection of South German Baroque painting and masterpieces by European greats like Veronese and Canaletto. Imagine the youthful Marie Antoinette gracing its dazzling Festsaal, dancing across its polished floors during her journey to Versailles. Visiting here is a truly worthwhile experience, offering a vivid immersion into history, high society, and unparalleled artistic beauty, all within a setting that feels both grand and intimately preserved.
