Hiking the Stein Wine Path
Accessing the steep, winding public pathways that cut directly through the famous northern vineyards requires only physical effort and a sense of adventure. The hike provides an incredibly close up, tactile look at the ancient limestone terraces where the highly prized local grapes are meticulously cultivated. The higher you climb, the more the sprawling, breathtaking panorama of the river valley and the distant fortress reveals itself. Informational boards are generously scattered along the route, providing a fantastic, free education on local geology and complex viticulture techniques. The intense heat radiating off the white stones creates a unique, almost Mediterranean microclimate that is fascinating to experience. It is arguably the most dramatic, visually rewarding free activity available in the area.
