History of Heyritz Park

The transformation of the Heyritz area reflects Strasbourg's long standing commitment to urban renewal and environmental sustainability. For decades, the land running alongside the historic Bassin de l'Hôpital remained an underutilised zone filled with untamed vegetation. In 2010, municipal leaders launched an ambitious project to reclaim this waterfront, crafting a contemporary green corridor that would bridge the gap between the historic city centre and Neudorf. Opening in 2014, the park was designed with ecological stewardship at its core, leading to its recognition with the prestigious EcoJardin label. Engineers and landscape architects worked in harmony with the natural waterways, constructing floating gardens and a mobile pedestrian bridge to foster biodiversity while keeping citizens connected. The central square was named Place de Vologda, celebrating international diplomatic ties during a dedicated opening ceremony that brought foreign dignitaries to the banks of the canal. Today, Heyritz Park stands as a vibrant testament to modern urban design. By turning former industrial land into an eco friendly sanctuary, Strasbourg created a gathering place where dynamic water features and native flora thrive side by side with modern city architecture.
