Flooded Crypt of Saint Francis
Beneath the high altar of this basilica lies an incredibly atmospheric, tenth century crypt that is permanently flooded due to the city's sinking ground level. Visitors can peer through an arched window into the dark water, which perfectly preserves fragments of the original floor mosaics. Drop a coin into the slot to illuminate the space, revealing goldfish swimming serenely above the ancient stones. It creates a hauntingly beautiful, highly surreal photograph.
