Villa Croce Museum of Contemporary Art

The story of Villa Croce begins long before it became a bastion of modern creativity. Originally a seventeenth century residence belonging to the prominent Spinola family, the villa underwent a dramatic shift in the nineteenth century. It was remodelled into the refined neoclassical structure that stands today, serving as the private estate for the wealthy Giovanni Giacomo Croce. For decades, it existed as an opulent family home, tucked away in the leafy heights of the Carignano district and looking out over the sparkling Mediterranean. In 1951, a pivotal change occurred when the Croce family gifted the property to the Municipality of Genoa. This generous act laid the groundwork for the site to evolve from a private sanctuary into a public beacon of art. After years of careful preparation, the doors finally opened as a museum in 1985, housing a profound collection initiated by Maria Cernuschi Ghiringhelli. Her vision established a permanent home for major Italian artists, creating a legacy that bridged the gap between the villa's historical architecture and the radical ideas of the twentieth century.
