Iconic Architecture and Landmarks in Genoa

Instantly recognisable by its striking, deep crimson facade, this magnificent seventeenth-century mansion is a crown jewel of the Strada Nuova. It was built for the powerful Brignole Sale family and designed to be a bold, highly visible statement of their immense wealth and influence. Constructed in 1180, this incredibly austere and imposing complex originally served as a vital hospital and shelter for pilgrims and crusaders departing for the Holy Land. The architecture is a stark, powerful example of Romanesque design, featuring thick stone walls, heavy arches, and a complete absence of the decorative flair seen in later centuries. The complex includes two distinct churches stacked directly on top of each other, reflecting the highly functional, protective needs of the Knights Hospitaller who built it. Walking through its stark, vaulted halls offers a profoundly atmospheric glimpse into the city's rugged, martial medieval past. It stands as a dark, striking contrast to the nearby modern port.

Constructed in the seventeenth century by the aristocratic Balbi family, this immense complex later became a residence for the Royal House of Savoy, hence its regal title. The architecture is staggeringly grand, designed specifically to rival the most opulent palaces of Europe. Its most famous feature is the spectacular Galleria degli Specchi (Hall of Mirrors), an incredibly ornate, gilded room that reflects light from the sea through massive windows. The palace also boasts a beautifully manicured, hanging terrace garden that offers sweeping, elevated views over the working harbour. The sheer scale and intricate detailing of the stuccowork throughout the rooms are absolutely phenomenal.

Directly facing its crimson counterpart across the Strada Nuova, this elegant palace is named for the distinctive pale stone used in its sixteenth-century construction. It was built for the immensely powerful Grimaldi family and stands out for its relatively restrained, highly symmetrical, and elegant Renaissance facade. Inside, the palace has been transformed into an exceptional art gallery, but it retains the spatial grandeur of an aristocratic home. The large, airy rooms and the beautiful, serene internal courtyard provide a refined contrast to the heavy Baroque ornamentation found in neighbouring buildings. It is a stunning example of the sophisticated architectural tastes of the early Genoese golden age.

This highly unusual church stands as a fascinating architectural compromise between religious devotion and the city's fiercely commercial spirit. Built in the late sixteenth century in the heart of the financial district, the church is uniquely elevated above street level on a raised platform. The space underneath the church was intentionally designed to house commercial shops, the rent from which was used to fund the building's construction.
