History of Victory Park

Victory Park carries the weight of history within its boundaries, reflecting the shifting tides of the twentieth century in Armenia. Originally envisioned in the late 1930s as Arabkir City Park, the area was intended to be a leisure space for the northern expansion of the city. However, the global conflict that soon consumed the world changed its trajectory entirely. Following the victory over Nazi Germany, the park was rechristened, becoming a solemn site dedicated to the collective memory of the Soviet sacrifice. The most visible manifestation of this era was the towering copper statue of Joseph Stalin, which stood as a dominant, imposing figure over the capital for more than a decade. The 1960s ushered in a quiet revolution in the park’s identity. The removal of the Stalin statue in 1962 marked a significant turning point, representing a desire for a national identity that moved beyond the personality cults of the past. In its place rose the Mother Armenia monument. Designed by Ara Harutyunyan, this statue did not represent a specific leader but rather the spirit of the nation itself. Holding a sword in her hands, she became the protector of the city, gazing down upon Yerevan with a stoic strength that resonated deeply with the local population. This change transformed the park from a Soviet memorial into a distinctly Armenian landmark. Today, the park is a seamless blend of historical reflection and modern recreation. The establishment of the Military Museum within the pedestal of the Mother Armenia monument ensures that the legacy of those who fought remains preserved, while the surrounding grounds offer a more lighthearted experience. From the quiet waters of Arevik Lake to the mechanical thrills of the amusement rides, the space serves as a communal living room for the people of Yerevan. It balances the gravity of war memorials with the laughter of families, proving that a city can honour its complex past while embracing the joy of the present.
