History of Mother Armenia
The site originally held a monument to Joseph Stalin, unveiled in 1950. The architect Rafayel Israyelian designed the pedestal as a three nave basilica church. He wisely suspected that the worship of dictators might fade, so he created a structure with lasting Armenian character underneath. By 1962, the political climate shifted and the Stalin statue was removed. Five years later, the current figure of Mother Armenia replaced it. Created by sculptor Ara Harutyunyan, the statue was modelled after a young woman named Genya Muradian. She was just seventeen when Harutyunyan approached her at a shop, seeing the perfect embodiment of national strength in her gaze. Today, the monument represents peace through strength. It honours the women of history who defended their homes and families. The museum within the pedestal now tells the story of the first Nagorno Karabakh War, with personal items of soldiers and maps from historic battles.
