Cavafy Museum
Hidden within an unassuming apartment block lies the former home of Constantine P. Cavafy, one of the most important Greek poets of the 20th century. The museum preserves the exact space where he lived and wrote for the last 25 years of his life. The rooms are filled with period furniture, rare manuscripts, and his death mask, creating an incredibly intimate, slightly melancholy atmosphere. It offers a profound, quiet connection to the city's lost cosmopolitan literary soul.
HISTORY & HIGHLIGHTS
Constantine P. Cavafy was born in Alexandria in 1863 to a wealthy Greek mercantile family, but a series of financial ruinous events left him working as a clerk in the Ministry of Public Works. Despite his mundane day job, his true life unfolded at night in the dimly lit cafes and hidden alleys of the city. He meticulously crafted poems that blended Hellenistic history with deeply personal, often melancholic, themes of love and longing. His work captured the fading grandeur of Alexandria, treating the city itself as a living, breathing, and ultimately tragic character in his life. For decades, Cavafy lived in a modest apartment on Rue Lepsius, a street notorious at the time for its brothels, which he famously defended by saying he lived 'where the flesh is cheap, but the spirit is rich'. He refused to publish his poems in traditional books, instead distributing them on loose sheets of paper to a select group of friends and admirers. It wasn't until after his death in 1933 that his work gained global recognition, influencing writers like E.M. Forster and Lawrence Durrell, and cementing his legacy as a master of modern poetry. Today, that very apartment has been preserved as a poignant museum. Walking through its quiet rooms, visitors can view the simple brass bed where he died, his wooden writing desk, and the hauntingly beautiful death mask. The museum stands not just as a tribute to a great writer, but as a time capsule of an era when Alexandria was a thriving, intellectual crossroads of the Mediterranean.
