Plaza O'Higgins

The story of Plaza O'Higgins began in the wake of the devastating 1906 earthquake that shook Valparaíso to its foundations. As city planners looked to rebuild, they envisioned a new public space in the El Almendral area, initially calling it Plaza de Merced after the nearby church. By 1910, the municipal council officially renamed it in honour of Bernardo O'Higgins, the founding father of the Chilean nation. For much of the twentieth century, the square became a social hub for the city's elite, reflecting the aspirations of a recovering metropolis determined to move forward after catastrophe. Decades later, the square underwent a transformative period. In 2014, authorities closed the gates to construct an underground parking complex, a project meant to improve urban accessibility. However, the ground had other plans. Excavations revealed ancient vessels and human remains belonging to the Diaguita-influenced Aconcagua culture, effectively pausing construction and turning a routine infrastructure project into a significant archaeological site. This discovery offered a profound window into the region's indigenous past, forcing planners to rethink the relationship between the modern city and the history buried beneath its feet. After years of delays and anticipation, the revamped plaza finally reopened in 2022. The reopening ceremony itself was deeply symbolic, beginning with a traditional ceremony led by the Diaguita people to honour their ancestors and bless the land. Today, the square stands as a resilient landmark that accommodates the needs of contemporary residents while acknowledging its deep historical roots. From its modern facilities and native trees to the quiet chess matches played by seniors, the space has reclaimed its place as a cherished corner of the city.
