Iglesia de La Matriz

Founded in 1559 by Bishop Rodrigo González de Marmolejo as a simple hut, the site served as the spiritual anchor for the early settlement. Over the centuries, it hosted a succession of religious orders, including Augustinians and Jesuits, becoming a central gathering point for the town's wealthy families who helped shape its unique identity. The path was far from easy for this historic site. The church became a target for infamous figures like Sir Francis Drake in 1578, who reportedly looted its treasures and silver chalices. Beyond human interference, the very earth proved a formidable opponent. Repeated seismic activity frequently destroyed the building, forcing the community to reconstruct it multiple times across the centuries. The current iteration, rising from the rubble of the 1822 earthquake, was finished in 1842 under the guidance of priest Jose Antonio Riobío. Its survival serves as a testament to the local community's dedication to preserving their history. Even after centuries of upheaval, this structure remains a cornerstone of Valparaíso, bridging the gap between the colonial past and the modern city.
