Southern Coastal Path

Cycling Route

Leaving the congested city centre behind, this route explores the modern, wealthy southern suburbs before reaching the expansive southern beaches. The roads here are generally newer and wider, passing by massive gated communities and huge shopping complexes. As you ride further south, the urban landscape quickly gives way to wilder, scrubby coastal terrain and quieter shores. It provides a fascinating look at the direction in which the city is rapidly expanding.

WHY WE LOVE THIS ROUTE

This route showcases the massive scale of the city's modern expansion while incorporating significant historical and cultural landmarks. It offers a much quieter and less congested riding experience than the downtown core.

RIDER'S NOTEBOOK

  • Carry plenty of water, as convenience stores are more spaced out in the sprawling southern suburbs.
  • Ensure your bike has good tires, as the pavement quality can unexpectedly drop once you pass the main shopping districts.
  • Start early in the day, as the southern roads offer very little shade and the equatorial sun becomes punishing by noon.
