Fushimi Inari Mountain Hike
Unlike almost every other major historical site in the city, the most famous shrine complex of them all charges absolutely zero admission fees and never closes its gates. You can hike through the mesmerising tunnel of thousands of vermilion torii gates at any hour of the day or night. Climbing the forested mountain path provides a robust physical workout, stunning city views, and an intense spiritual atmosphere. Visiting very early in the morning or late at night costs nothing and provides a wildly atmospheric, crowd-free experience.
