Legon Botanical Gardens

The story of the Legon Botanical Gardens begins in 1950, rooted in the academic mission of the University of Ghana. For decades, it existed primarily as a space for the Department of Botany to conduct research and preserve local flora. Recognising the potential for the space to serve the community, these partners embarked on a project to introduce recreational elements that would honour the landscape while inviting the public to engage with it. They introduced high rope courses, canoeing facilities, and canopy walks, effectively bridging the gap between an academic research site and a vibrant destination for outdoor adventure. Today, the legacy of this transformation is reflected in the gardens' modern spirit. It stands as a rare example of a place that balances ecological conservation with active play.
