Sillon Promenade

Walking Route

A long, flat walk following the seawall that protects the newer districts from the ocean. The defining feature is the line of massive oak trunks driven deep into the sand, placed there to shatter the incoming waves. You pass a continuous line of elegant, tall windowed villas built during the seaside resort boom of the 19th century. During high tides, the water crashes violently against the stone wall, occasionally spraying walkers with foam.

WHY WE LOVE THIS ROUTE

This walk delivers the quintessential coastal experience, highlighting the city's constant, dramatic battle against the erosive power of the sea.

WALKER'S FIELD NOTES

  • If a storm is blowing, do not walk directly next to the seawall, as the waves can easily pull you over.
  • The sunset colors reflect beautifully on the wet sand as the tide goes out.
