The temporary path that emerges from the ocean to connect the beach to the imposing island fortress. Shooting from the beach looking out, the fort creates a sharp, dark silhouette against the setting sun over the channel. If you stand on the causeway and look back, you capture the towering city walls curving away into the distance. It visually captures the isolation and defensive posture of the coastal architecture.

A staggered line of enormous, weathered oak trunks driven deep into the sand to protect the seawall. At low tide, they stand exposed like a wooden army, covered in green algae and barnacles. When the tide is high and the wind is blowing, massive waves explode against them, sending white spray high into the air. Capturing the exact moment of impact makes for incredibly dramatic, violent coastal photography.

A narrow, slightly leaning alleyway hidden deep within the walled city. It is famous because it contains a small row of authentic, timber framed houses that miraculously survived the total destruction of 1944. The wooden beams are painted in deep reds and blues, contrasting sharply with the uniform grey granite of the rebuilt streets surrounding it. It provides a rare, genuine glimpse of what the city looked like centuries ago.

This viewpoint is best accessed from the small slipway leading down to the water next to the Aleth peninsula. You frame the massive, triple-towered medieval keep on the left, with the wide, boat filled expanse of the Rance estuary opening up to the right. The water here is usually calmer than the open beaches, providing clean reflections of the stone masonry. It works particularly well in the soft morning light.

A stark, concrete diving platform rising out of the seawater pool on the western beach. During high tide, it appears to be floating entirely alone in the ocean. The brutalist concrete lines provide a sharp contrast to the natural curves of the bay and the historic stonework of the ramparts behind it. Photographers often use long exposures here to smooth out the water, making the harsh concrete structure pop.
