The Best Views of Saint-Malo

This rounded stone structure anchors the northwestern corner of the city ramparts. Climbing to the top platform provides a sweeping view directly over the sandy expanse of Bon-Secours beach. From here, you can clearly track the tidal causeways leading out to the offshore islands of Grand Bé and Petit Bé. The wind is exceptionally strong here, whipping off the open channel without obstruction.

Accessible only when the tide is out, climbing the rocky paths of this island brings you to a small, grassy plateau. Looking back east, you get a unique, isolated perspective of the entire walled city rising like a single block of stone from the beach. Looking west, the view is pure, unbroken ocean horizon. It is a highly atmospheric spot, shared only with a few other walkers and the simple tomb of Chateaubriand.

A high, wooded vantage point located south of the main city on the Aleth peninsula. The view looks back across the busy marina basin, offering a perfect profile of the walled city's skyline dominated by the cathedral spire. You can also watch the ferry traffic navigating the narrow channels toward the open sea. It is much quieter than the ramparts, shaded by tall pine trees.

Standing on the defensive platform directly above the oldest gate into the city. From this elevated position, you look directly down onto the inner harbour where hundreds of modern yachts are moored. Turning around, you have a straight view down the narrow, busy commercial streets of Intra-Muros. It visually bridges the gap between the modern maritime economy and the historic stone core.

Located at the far eastern end of the long Sillon beach, where the sand finally gives way to steep cliffs. Standing on the edge, you can look straight down the entire 3 kilometre curve of the bay back toward the walled city. Surfers often gather in the water below this point to catch the incoming swells. It offers the best perspective to appreciate the sheer length of the coastal defences.

You cannot climb this lighthouse, as it sits on a treacherous rocky reef far out in the bay. However, taking a coastal boat tour provides a dramatic view of this isolated, red-painted stone tower surrounded by crashing white water. Looking back from this position, the city appears small and vulnerable against the long coastline. It highlights the extreme danger the local geography posed to historical navigation.
