Confluence Architecture Trail
Walking RouteIndustrial wastelands have been entirely erased and replaced by sharp, avant-garde geometry. You walk past apartment buildings covered in perforated green aluminium and office blocks painted vibrant, unnatural orange. The water is ever-present, with an artificial basin drawing the river directly into the heart of the neighbourhood. Swans paddle past sleek luxury yachts moored outside glass-fronted restaurants. The walk ends at the very tip of the peninsula, where the two rivers finally smash into each other.

WHY WE LOVE THIS ROUTE
It acts as a stark, futuristic counterpoint to the city's heavy Roman and Renaissance heritage, showing off a bold, modern vision of urban regeneration.
WALKER'S FIELD NOTES
- • Walk down the Saône side of the peninsula, not the Rhône side, to see the best architecture and the boat moorings.
- • You can take the small 'Vaporetto' water shuttle back to the city centre instead of walking the return leg.

Nautical Square
PLACE NAUTIQUEA deeply cut artificial harbour brings the water right to the foot of modern residential blocks. Tiered seating allows pedestrians to sit right at the water's edge.

Orange Cube
LE CUBE ORANGEA striking, acid-orange office building features a massive, conical hole punched entirely through its structure. It represents the radical architectural departure of the entire district.

MUSÉE DES CONFLUENCESA chaotic collision of glass and steel sits exactly where the two rivers meet. The deconstructivist architecture looks like a crashed spaceship dominating the peninsula's tip.

Renaissance Vieux Lyon Walk
Tall, pastel-coloured facades lean slightly over narrow cobblestone streets, blocking out the modern world. You press heavy iron buttons to unlock wooden doors, revealing hidden courtyards with spiralling stone staircases. The smell of frying onions and roasted pork wafts out from the tiny kitchens of traditional bistros. Tourist crowds gather around the most famous monuments, but taking a sudden turn down a dark passageway instantly restores the quiet. You emerge back onto the street several blocks away, having passed entirely beneath the residential blocks.

Ainay Aristocratic Stroll
A peaceful walk through the Presqu'île's most affluent and historically aristocratic quarter. South of the vast Place Bellecour, the grid of streets narrows into a quiet enclave of antique shops, art galleries, and imposing 18th-century facades. The atmosphere is distinctly hushed, providing a stark contrast to the commercial frenzy of the northern shopping avenues. You pass by heavy, varnished wooden doors that hide some of the wealthiest private courtyards in the city.

Croix-Rousse Silk Slopes
Severe gradients and endless flights of stone stairs challenge your calves on the climb up the northern hill. Buildings here feature unusually high, unadorned windows, built specifically to let light hit the massive wooden silk looms inside. Graffiti and political street art cover the retaining walls and iron handrails. You weave down through covered stairwells that cut straight through the middle of residential blocks. The atmosphere is resolutely bohemian, gritty, and fiercely independent.

Alternative Ways to Tour the City
Switch your pace. Discover curated routes by bike, foot, or self-guided exploration.

ViaRhôna Urban Stretch
The European cycling route cuts a clean line directly through the city along the eastern bank of the Rhône. You drop down to the water level, leaving the noise of cars and trams entirely behind. The path glides past long stretches of wooden decking where university students sit with their legs dangling over the water. Massive stone bridges cross overhead, creating sudden, cool shadows on sunny days. The smooth surface makes for completely effortless pedalling from one end of the city to the other.

Birth of Cinema
Venture into the eastern Monplaisir district to stand exactly where the moving image was born. This route circles the remnants of the massive Lumière factory and the family's opulent Art Nouveau villa. You walk the exact pavement featured in the first film ever screened to a paying public. It is a pilgrimage for cinephiles, showing how a local industrialist family accidentally changed global culture.
