Founders of Aviation Park

The story of this park is deeply intertwined with the dawn of aviation in Colombia, a time when the skies over Barranquilla were a frontier of immense promise. In the early 20th century, the city became the cradle of South American aviation, largely thanks to the formation of SCADTA, a bold joint venture between Colombian entrepreneurs and German aviators. This partnership revolutionised how the country connected with the outside world. The park itself serves as a living museum of this ambition, preserving the memory of the eight men whose vision transformed a coastal city into a global gateway. The physical centrepiece of the park, the bronze eagle, holds a more solemn history. Donated by Germany in 1926, it serves as a memorial for the victims of the 1924 Junkers F 13 Tolima crash. This tragic event shook the nascent aviation community, yet it became a symbol of international solidarity between Germany and Colombia. For decades, this sculpture stood watch over the eastern boulevard, silently witnessing the growth of the neighbourhood before finding its permanent home in this dedicated park in 1969. Today, the park represents more than just a monument to flight; it reflects the heritage of El Prado, a district defined by its historical grandeur.
