English Park

English Park has been a constant presence in the shifting landscape of Yerevan for over 160 years. Conceived in the 1860s, it emerged during a time when the city was beginning to modernise, offering a rare patch of greenery for residents to gather. As the decades passed, the park became a silent witness to the turbulent history of the region. Through the collapse of empires and the rise of the Soviet Union, the park changed its identity and name, eventually becoming a memorial to the 26 Baku Commissars. Yet, the character of the space remained resilient, anchored in the daily lives of the people who walked its paths. The site cemented its legacy in the popular imagination during the early 20th century. In 1920, it transformed into an arena for sport, hosting the very first modern football match between Yerevan and Alexandropol. This event turned a simple patch of grass into a stadium of local history, sparking a love for the game that remains intense across Armenia today. It was a moment of levity and community spirit during a time of immense political change, proving that the park offered far more to the community than just trees and benches. In more recent years, the park has adapted to the needs of a growing capital. While the footprint of the space was reduced in the early 2000s to accommodate new roads and diplomatic missions, its importance to local identity remains undiminished. It has successfully reinvented itself as a sanctuary of culture and celebration. Today, the sight of newlyweds near the fountains and the proximity to the Sundukyan Academic Theatre highlight a modern spirit that values both its storied past and its role as a living, breathing part of Yerevan’s vibrant culture.
