The Seasons of Kabul

Spring is arguably the most beautiful time to visit, as the harsh winter recedes and the valley turns surprisingly green. The fruit trees inside the Gardens of Babur burst into spectacular bloom, filling the air with a sweet fragrance. The weather is comfortably mild, making it ideal for hiking the ancient city walls or exploring the bustling outdoor markets. It is also a culturally vibrant time as locals celebrate the ancient Nowruz new year, bringing a festive atmosphere to the shrines and parks.

Summers in the city are hot, dry, and distinctly dusty, requiring a slower pace during the midday heat. This is the perfect season to join the locals in escaping to the cooler, breezy shores of Qargha Lake for afternoon boat rides and lakeside picnics. Evenings are wonderful as the temperature drops significantly, making outdoor dining on restaurant terraces highly enjoyable. The clear skies provide excellent visibility for sunset photography from the surrounding mountain viewpoints.

Autumn brings a sharp, crisp coolness to the air and remarkably clear blue skies, offering a great respite from the summer dust. The foliage in the surrounding areas, particularly out towards the Paghman Valley, turns a brilliant golden yellow. It is a fantastic time for landscape photography and embarking on longer walking tours through the historical districts without overheating. The markets are overflowing with fresh, famous local produce like pomegranates, grapes, and walnuts harvested from the surrounding provinces.

Winters are biting and cold, often blanketing the city and the surrounding Hindu Kush peaks in heavy, brilliant white snow. The city takes on a quieter, more subdued atmosphere as residents huddle indoors around traditional bukhari heaters. While navigating the icy streets can be challenging, the visual reward of seeing the ancient fortresses and palaces covered in snow is breathtaking. Warming up with a hot bowl of traditional soup or fresh green tea in a local teahouse becomes a highly comforting daily ritual.
