  • MEDITERRANEAN REVIVAL

    Freedom Tower

This yellow, cupola-topped skyscraper was modeled explicitly after the Giralda bell tower in Seville, Spain. Constructed in 1925, it originally housed a major local newspaper before being abandoned and subsequently repurposed by the federal government. In the 1960s, it operated as the main processing centre for hundreds of thousands of Cuban refugees fleeing the Castro regime, earning its current name. It stands today as a highly emotional symbol of the immigrant experience in South Florida. The ornate, Mediterranean details provide a stark visual break from the glass towers rising behind it.

  • CONTEMPORARY / DECONSTRUCTIVIST

    Adrienne Arsht Center

ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Massive sweeps of white steel and glass cut sharply across the skyline, dominating the northern edge of the downtown core. The complex straddles a major boulevard, connecting its two massive acoustic halls via an elevated pedestrian bridge. Inside, the grand opera house features intricate, tiered balconies designed to deliver flawless acoustics for unamplified voices. It visually anchors the city's push to be taken seriously as a global destination for high culture. The aggressive, modern angles starkly contrast with the older, boxy high-rises nearby.

  • MIAMI MODERN (MIMO) / INTERNATIONAL

    Bacardi Building

Two striking mid-century towers sit prominently on Biscayne Boulevard, originally serving as the US headquarters for the famous rum company. The taller tower features walls composed entirely of vibrant, blue-and-white azulejo tiles depicting abstract floral patterns. The adjacent, square building is suspended over a glass base and wrapped entirely in thick, colourful stained glass designed by an abstract painter. It represents a bold, optimistic era of corporate architecture that embraced heavy Latin influences. The complex now serves as the headquarters for the National YoungArts Foundation.

  • MEDITERRANEAN REVIVAL

    Biltmore Hotel

A massive, ornate tower rises out of the flat suburban canopy of Coral Gables, visible for miles in every direction. The 1920s resort features hand-painted ceilings, heavy wooden beams, and a massive copper-clad cupola. It boasts one of the largest swimming pools in the country, surrounded by classical statues and grand colonnades. During the Second World War, the military sealed the windows and transformed the luxury rooms into a sprawling veteran's hospital. It operates today as a monument to the extravagant, unapologetic wealth of the 1920s land boom.

  • ATMOSPHERIC / MOORISH REVIVAL

    Olympia Theater

Stepping into this 1920s movie palace feels exactly like walking into a nocturnal Moorish courtyard. The ceiling is painted to resemble a dark night sky, complete with twinkling stars and drifting, projected clouds. Ornate balconies, faux turrets, and intricate tile work surround the massive stage, overwhelming the eye with theatrical detail. It survived decades of urban decay and multiple threats of demolition to remain the city's most elaborately decorated indoor venue. The sheer volume of gold leaf and velvet serves as a loud reminder of the vaudeville era.

  • ART DECO / STREAMLINE MODERNE

    Miami City Hall

The centre of the local government operates out of a building originally constructed as a Pan American Airways seaplane terminal in the 1930s. The sleek, streamlined exterior features nautical motifs, rounded corners, and classic Art Deco lettering above the entrance. Inside, vintage photographs remind visitors that passengers once boarded massive 'flying clippers' from the adjacent docks to reach South America. It sits right on the edge of Dinner Key, combining civic duty with a breezy, maritime atmosphere. The preservation of the terminal highlights the city's deep historical ties to early aviation.
