The Seasons of Oaxaca City

Spring is marked by steadily rising temperatures, culminating in highly energetic, hot days just before the rains arrive. The skies are generally clear and brilliantly blue, making it perfect for early morning excursions to the surrounding ruins and villages. The highlight of the season is the solemn yet spectacular Holy Week (Semana Santa) in April, where the streets are carpeted in intricate sawdust tapestries. The warm evenings are ideal for sitting on the Zócalo terraces with a cold artisan beer.

Summer brings the rainy season, transforming the surrounding arid valleys into lush, vibrant green landscapes. The rain typically arrives in heavy, dramatic afternoon downpours, leaving the mornings clear and the evenings comfortably cool. July is the absolute peak of cultural activity, dominated by the massive Guelaguetza festival, filling the city with indigenous music, dance, and parades. It is a brilliant time to witness the surrounding nature at its most verdant, provided you carry an umbrella.

Autumn is arguably the most magical time to visit, as the rains taper off and the air becomes crisp and clear. The landscape remains green, and the city begins preparing for its most famous celebration. Late October and early November are entirely devoted to the mesmerising Day of the Dead festivities, turning the streets and cemeteries into candlelit, marigold-draped masterpieces. The atmosphere is deeply spiritual, incredibly festive, and visually unparalleled.

Winter offers pleasant, sunny days with very little rainfall, though temperatures can drop significantly during the night due to the altitude. The festive season kicks off with the bizarre and brilliant Night of the Radishes just before Christmas, drawing huge crowds to the main square. It is a fantastic time for long, unhurried walks through the historic centre and indulging in rich, warming bowls of hot chocolate and mole. The crisp, dry air provides excellent visibility for photography and hiking.
