The Best Views of Salerno

Situated on the border with Vietri sul Mare, this towering peak dominates the skyline to the west. Reaching the summit requires a genuine hike, but the reward is arguably the most breathtaking view in the entire province. You can see the entirety of Salerno to one side, and the dramatic, plunging cliffs of the Amalfi Coast beginning on the other. At the top sits an ancient 10th-century hermitage, adding historical weight to the vista.

Located slightly north of Arechi Castle, this ancient circular watchtower was built as an advanced defensive position. Because it sits higher and slightly apart from the main castle, it offers an incredibly clear, unobstructed view straight down the Irno Valley and across the historic centre. It is less visited than the main castle terrace, offering a peaceful spot to photograph the historic rooftops.

Rising significantly in the eastern part of the city, this wooded hill provides an exceptionally wide panoramic shot. From the top, you can look down over the dense urban grid, the vast commercial port, and the endless blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea stretching towards the horizon. It is a quiet, natural escape that truly shows the scale of the city's geographical setting. The view is particularly dramatic when weather fronts roll in off the sea.

Standing in the centre of Piazza della Libertà, backed by the sweeping colonnades of the Crescent building, provides a brilliant architectural vantage point. You can capture the impressive modern geometry of the plaza leading directly out into the open sea. It is a fantastic place to photograph the sunset, as the light reflects off the water and the pale stone of the contemporary buildings.

A charming, elevated garden square situated just behind the Verdi Theatre. Because it is raised above the street level, it offers an excellent, unimpeded view over the bustling harbour and the passenger ferries coming and going. It is framed by mature trees, creating a perfectly framed, picturesque view of the maritime activity below. It is a highly accessible viewpoint requiring very little physical effort.

For a completely different, modern perspective, head to the end of the breakwater at this luxurious new port. From out on the water's edge, you can look back at the entire sprawling coastline of the city, backed by the imposing mountains. The view includes the sleek yachts in the foreground and the city lights twinkling in the distance. It is an exceptionally good location for twilight photography.
