The Seasons of Matera

Spring is arguably the most beautiful time to visit the city and its surrounding landscape. The temperatures are mild and highly comfortable, making the constant stair climbing and hiking across the ravine a joy rather than a sweaty chore. The usually arid Murgia plateau erupts in a brief but brilliant display of green grasses and colourful wildflowers, providing a stunning contrast against the pale stone. The atmosphere is lively as outdoor cafes reopen their terraces, but the streets are not yet overwhelmed by peak summer crowds.

Summer brings intense heat to the exposed stone streets, meaning sightseeing is best done in the early mornings or late evenings. However, the season is defined by vibrant cultural energy, most notably the chaotic and spectacular Feast of the Madonna della Bruna in early July. The long, balmy evenings are absolutely perfect for enjoying outdoor jazz concerts, lingering over late dinners in the squares, and soaking in the lively, deeply social Italian nightlife. It is a time of high energy, festivals, and bustling crowds.

As the intense summer heat subsides, the city returns to a much more relaxed, comfortable pace. The golden light of autumn beautifully enhances the natural colour of the limestone architecture, creating ideal conditions for photography. It is an exceptional season for food lovers, as the region celebrates the harvest with local festivals focusing on rich, earthy flavours like new wine and roasted chestnuts. The cooler weather also makes tackling the hiking trails through the nearby gorge highly enjoyable once again.

Winter is generally quiet and chilly, with occasional dustings of snow that transform the ancient city into a breathtaking, monochromatic wonderland. The absolute highlight of the season is the spectacular live nativity scene that takes over the caves in December, drawing visitors from across the country. The cold weather provides the perfect excuse to retreat into cosy, cave based restaurants to enjoy hearty local soups and robust red wine. It is a highly atmospheric, romantic time to experience the city without the crowds.
