Iconic Architecture and Landmarks in Lecce

Erected in the mid sixteenth century to honour Emperor Charles V, this massive, standalone monument was consciously designed to resemble an ancient Roman triumphal arch. It lacks the floral exuberance of the later baroque period, relying instead on heavy, powerful classical proportions and towering Corinthian columns. The massive triangular pediment is deeply carved with imperial eagles, cannons and armour, clearly projecting military might and royal loyalty. It served as the awe inspiring primary entrance for anyone arriving from the capital city of Naples.

Attached seamlessly to the magnificent Holy Cross Basilica, this incredibly vast former monastery complex is a breathtaking example of civic baroque architecture. The elongated facade features twenty one beautifully ornate windows, each framed by deeply intricate stonework, creating an incredibly pleasing rhythm along the street. Following the suppression of religious orders, the massive complex was repurposed and now serves as the grand seat of the local government. The sheer scale and delicate decoration of the building highlight the immense wealth and power once held by the Celestine monks.

Dedicated to the former patron saint of the city, this colossal church features a relatively austere and highly monumental facade that dominates the street it sits upon. The powerful, restrained exterior dramatically belies the sheer scale and opulence hidden within its walls. The interior is absolutely vast, featuring soaring vaulted ceilings and enormous, highly complex stone altarpieces dedicated to various saints. It is a stunning example of the immense resources wielded by the influential Theatine order during the seventeenth century.

Completed in the early eighteenth century, this spectacular church represents the magnificent final flowering of the local baroque style. The towering facade is a masterpiece of verticality, defined by incredibly striking grooved stone columns and intricate balustrades. The astonishingly detailed stone flower baskets carved near the main entrance are considered some of the finest examples of the local stonemasonry craft. It offers an incredibly theatrical and elegant presence situated just steps away from the western city gate.

Rebuilt in 1703 after the collapse of an older medieval structure, this gate is the most highly decorated and theatrical entrance to the old city. It was designed primarily to impress rather than defend, featuring spectacular statues of Saint Oronzo, Saint Irene and Saint Dominic perched elegantly upon its heavy stone cornices. The incredibly unique inclusion of carved busts representing the mythical founders of the city provides a fascinating nod to classical antiquity. Walking through its grand archway feels like stepping onto an elaborate theatrical stage.

Sitting squarely in the main plaza, this highly unusual, box like structure served as the historical seat of the local town council. Built in the late sixteenth century, it features massive pointed Gothic arches paired with delicate Renaissance decorations, creating a fascinating architectural hybrid. The expansive glass walls allow light to pour through the structure, giving it a wonderfully airy, open feel. It stands as a brilliant architectural symbol of civic authority contrasting against the surrounding religious monuments.
