Carnot Square
The flat, marble-paved centre of the Bastide dictates the social life of the lower town. A massive 18th-century fountain featuring Neptune commands the middle, constantly surrounded by pigeons and exhausted shoppers. Ringed entirely by cafes, the square absorbs the noise of clinking espresso cups and animated local arguments. It provides a sharp, lively contrast to the solemn historical silence of the fortress.
