The Best Views of Canberra

This is arguably the most famous and photographed panoramic vantage point in the territory. From the summit, you look directly down the red gravel of Anzac Parade, straight across the lake, and perfectly into the heart of Parliament House. It brilliantly illustrates the strict geometric symmetry of Walter Burley Griffin's original city plan. The views at dusk, as the city lights illuminate the monuments, are absolutely spectacular.

Rising almost two hundred metres above the peak of Black Mountain, this massive telecommunications tower dominates the city skyline. It provides completely unobstructed 360 degree views stretching from the urban centre all the way to the distant Brindabella mountain ranges. The enclosed and open air viewing decks allow you to experience the vast scale of the surrounding bushland. It is a highly recognizable brutalist landmark.

Hidden away behind the grounds of the Royal Military College, this lesser known viewpoint offers a unique angle down the length of the lake. You must drive through the military academy to reach it, which deters most casual tourists. It features a poignant memorial to the Royal Australian Artillery and offers a very quiet, contemplative atmosphere. The view across the water toward the central monuments is superb.

As the highest peak within the immediate suburban area, this summit requires a steep hike to reach the top, as there is no public vehicular access. The effort is rewarded with sweeping, rugged views overlooking the northern suburbs and the distant agricultural plains. It feels significantly more wild and isolated than the highly manicured tourist lookouts. It is the perfect spot for those wanting a challenging walk combined with a rewarding vista.

A prominent hill separating the southern districts of Woden and Tuggeranong, popular almost exclusively with local residents. The short, steep walk to the summit reveals brilliant views of the sprawling southern suburbs framed by the massive peaks of the Namadgi National Park. It is one of the best places in the city to watch dramatic storm fronts roll in over the mountains. The trails here are shared with grazing kangaroos in the early evenings.

Located in the southern suburbs, this elevated ridge offers a fantastic reverse perspective looking back toward the city centre. The viewpoint provides excellent sights of the parliamentary triangle and the sprawling lake from a slightly lower, more intimate angle than the larger mountains. It is a favourite local spot to grab a coffee at the summit cafe and watch the morning mist burn off the water. The surrounding bushland is also teeming with native birds.
